How to use an Android phone as a webcam on a Mac

A Mac has no built-in way to use an Android phone as a camera. Apple's Continuity Camera works only with iPhones, and Microsoft's Phone Link camera is for Windows. Two ways do work, depending on where you need the camera.

Add phone camera, scan the code, and the phone's picture becomes the camera bubble.

Need the phone in video calls? Use a webcam app. Need it in recordings or live streams? Floonova does that with nothing to install on the phone.

With Floonova, step by step

  1. Open Floonova on your Mac and start a new recording. Choose Record, or Go live to stream.
  2. Click Add phone camera. A code appears on your screen.
  3. Scan the code with your phone's camera app or Google Lens. Open the link it shows. The page opens in your phone's browser.
  4. Tap Enable camera, then Allow. The main camera is chosen for you. Tap Selfie camera to switch.
  5. Put the phone down. Its picture is now the camera bubble on your recording or your stream.

If something goes wrong

Camera access was denied

Tap the icon to the left of the web address, open Permissions, and allow Camera. Then tap Enable camera.

It won't connect

Put the phone and the Mac on the same Wi-Fi; that usually fixes it. On a network that blocks the connection, such as some office or school Wi-Fi, switch the phone between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again.

The picture stops when the phone locks

Floonova keeps the phone's screen on while it's connected, where the phone allows it, and the camera picks up again when you unlock it. For a long take, lengthen the screen timeout in the phone's display settings; the exact menu differs between phone makers.

Questions

Does it work with any Android phone?

It works through the phone's browser, so an Android phone with an up-to-date browser such as Chrome can do it, whoever made the phone.

Does it work on Intel Macs?

Yes. Floonova runs on Macs with Apple silicon or an Intel chip.

Do I need a cable or an app on the phone?

No. The phone connects through its browser, with nothing to install and nothing to sign in to.

Does the phone send sound too?

No, only the picture. Your voice comes from the Mac's microphone, or one plugged into it.

Can I use my Android phone as a webcam in Zoom or Google Meet on a Mac?

Not through Floonova, whose phone camera works in its own recordings and live streams. For video calls, use a webcam app such as Camo, which installs on both the phone and the Mac.

What quality is the picture?

720p on the Free plan, and Full HD on Pro. See pricing
