Floonova vs OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the free, open-source workhorse of recording and live streaming: it can do almost anything, once you've set it up. Floonova is for people who want to press record, or go live, and get a polished take without building scenes first.
At a glance
| Feature | Floonova | OBS Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free plan. Pro is $8 a month billed yearly, or $12 month to month | Free and open source |
| Computers | Mac (Apple silicon or Intel) and Windows 10 or later | Windows 10 and 11, macOS 13 or later, and Linux |
| Getting started | Pick a screen or window, a camera and a microphone | Build scenes from sources: screens, windows, cameras, images, text and more |
| Your phone as the camera | Built in: scan a code with any iPhone or Android phone, with no app | Uses the cameras your computer sees: an iPhone through Apple's Continuity Camera on a Mac, an Android phone through Phone Link on Windows 11, or a phone webcam app |
| Cursor zoom | Automatic, where you click | Not built in; community scripts and plugins add it |
| Editing | Trim on Free; cut sections and fine-tune zooms on Pro | None built in: record, then edit in another app |
| Sharing | A link that plays in any browser, on Pro | None built in: you upload the file yourself |
| Separate tracks | Screen, camera, microphone and system audio as separate files, on Pro | Several audio tracks in one recording; separate video files need a plugin |
| Live streaming | YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, LinkedIn or any RTMP server | Many services built in, plus any RTMP server |
| Scenes, overlays and plugins | No: one screen, a camera bubble, and your logo on Pro | Yes. That's its strength |
| Virtual camera for video calls | No | Yes |
| Available | Launching soon | Now |
Choose OBS Studio if
- You want scenes, overlays and transitions, and you enjoy setting them up.
- You need Linux, or a virtual camera for video calls.
- You want free and open-source software with a large community of plugins.
Choose Floonova if
- You want to start recording or streaming in a minute, without building scenes.
- You'd rather use your phone as the camera than your laptop's webcam, whatever phone and computer you have.
- You make tutorials or demos, and want zooms where you click without adding them by hand.
- You want to send a link instead of a file, or hand your editor clean tracks that stay in sync.
Can I use both?
Yes. They're separate apps, so you can keep OBS Studio for big productions and use Floonova for everyday takes.
